Hyunjoo Park

Contemporary painting encompassing various genres was greatly influenced by Impressionism in the early 20th century.

At the beginning of the 20th century, Impressionist artists were obsessed with color and devoted their lives to exploring and expressing the change of color by natural light from moment to moment. Everything shown and expressed in the light of nature was the artist's interpretation.

'Water Lilies', which became the last work of Claude Monet, a representative Impressionist artist, completed the water lily while watching the faint rays of light from dawn to the setting sun in a situation where Monet lost his sight and could hardly see objects. Even if it was already drawn in his mind and expressed as a memory, the faint ray of light was sublimated into color.

After that, for the artists, the form exists by the color, and the expression remains the interpretation of the artist.

This can be either figuration or abstraction.

The artist in this exhibition, Hyunjoo Park, studies light and expresses it with color.

After graduating from the Department of Western Painting at Seoul National University, the artist moved to New York, completed Master's degree in Painting at New York University (NYU), and again completed a doctorate in art at the Graduate School of the Tokyo University of the Arts.

Hyunjoo Park creates light with the physical property of ‘gold’, which is the mother of nature.

The artist uses gold leaf rather than gold paint to express the light as a modern abstraction by combining the natural, non-artificial color of gold and the physical properties of painting.

Artist Hyunjoo Park begins her work through the repetitive act of trapping with hand-crafted paints on the fabric instead of using a ready-made canvas. The traces of overlapping paints find the light as the time of permeation and spreading while trapping is repeated.

Just as the essence of truth cannot be changed within the category of life, the artist's essence of artistic thinking does not change and remains intact in the work.

Hyunjoo Park’s subtle harmony of gold and color will convey the artist's serene philosophical thinking.

다양한 장르를 아우르는 현대회화는 20세기초 인상파에서 많은 영향을 받았다.

20세기초 인상파의 작가들은 색에 집착하며 자연의 빛에 의한 색의 변화를 시시각각 탐구하며 표현하기 위해 생을 받쳤다. 자연의 빛에서 보여지고 표현되는 것은 모두 작가의 해석 이었다.

인상파의 대표적인 작가 끌로드 모네의 유작이된 ‘수련’은 모네가 시각을 잃어 사물이 거의 보이지 않는 상황에서 새벽부터 저무는 노을까지 희미한 빛줄기를 바라보며 수련을 완성 하였다 수없이 반복했던 작업속에서 수련은 모네의 마음에 이미 그려져 기억으로 표현되도 희미한 빛줄기는 빛이 색으로 승화 되었다.

이후 작가들에게 형태는 색에 의해 존재하게되고 표현은 작가의 해석으로 남게된다.

이렇게 구상(figuration)도 되고 추상(abstraction) 도 된다.

이번 전시의 작가 박현주는 빛을 연구하고 색으로 표현한다.

작가는 서울대학교 서양화과를 졸업 후 뉴욕으로 건너가 뉴욕대학교(NYU)에서 스튜디오페인팅 석사를 마치고, 다시 동경예술대학 대학원에서 미술학 박사를 마쳤다.

박현주 작가는 자연에 모태인 ‘금(GOLD)’ 이라는 물성으로 빛을 만들어 낸다.

굳이 작가는 금색이 아닌 ‘금’을 사용하여 인위적이지 않은 자연 발색적으로 퍼져 나오는 금빛과 회화물감의 물성을 합하여 현대적인 추상으로 표현한다.

박현주작가는 기성캔버스를 쓰지 않고 마천에 손수 제작한 물감으로 덫칠하는 반복적 행위를 통해 작업을 시작한다. 덫 칠하며 스며듬과 번짐의 시간이 반복되어 지나면서 중첩되어지는 물감의 흔적들은 빛을 찾아나간다.

삶의 카테고리안에서 진실의 본질은 변할수 없듯 예술적 사고의 작가적 본질은 변하지 않고 작품에 고스란히 남는다.  

박현주 작가의 은은히 발색 되는 금과 색의 조화는 작가의 고요한 철학적 사고를 전달 해줄것이다.
